The Coffee

The coffee is grown at elevations between 4000 to 5000 feet. The growers are certified and passionately committed to organic agricultural practices. The coffee variety is Bourbon, Typica and Caturra. This rare coffee has very good acidity and is nicely balanced with a slight hint of spice.

The Region

In the republic of San Marcos, Guatemala, nestled in the mountains just below Volcano Tajumalco (the highest volcano in Central America at 13,715 feet), live a small group of coffee producers.

The farmers and their families enjoy a peaceful existence amongst the beautiful, diverse forest landscape. The region is a beautiful combination of jungle and rainforest, with coffee growing throughout the forest floor.

Also among the forest and coffee, a variety of other plants provide food for the producers and their families. It is very common to see bananas, beans, peppers and oranges, lemons and avocados growing throughout the landscape. Many of the producers have planted small medicinal plant gardens next to their homes.

The People

This group of 366 coffee producers are spread out over the rugged mountain terrain, some as far as a 3 to 4 hour walk. Even with these distances, the producers spend a great deal of time conducting weekly meetings to maintain good communication and training sessions in order to insure quality standards are upheld and to improve their productions.

These growers exclusively produce Fair Trade coffee. They say the greatest benefit of Fair Trade is, “The men do not have to leave the village to work in the coastal area after the coffee harvest; they can remain home with their families.”
